Kumon and our lousy Math scores etc.

Dear Plainview,
Please take the new survey.
I am interested in compiling information about your use of out of district tutorial instruction, such as Kumon, Sylvan Score, etc. The scores in our reading and math are in the sewer, and I am wondering if even those scores are bolstered because a large percentage of students are getting outside extra help.
Examples of our math scores....

How students in Nassau County grade 4 fared in Math tests in 2007.
Serious academic problems Level 1
Met some standards Level 2
Met all standards Level 3
Exceeded standards Level 4

Level 1 2 3 4

Pasadena Elementary School (Plainview) 0.0% 5.0% 63.6% 31.3%
Ulysses Elementary School (Roosevelt) 0.0% 0.0% 66.6% 33.3%
George A. Jackson School (Jericho) 0.0% 0.0% 21.1% 78.8%
Village Elementary School (Syosset) 0.0% 0.0% 37.0% 62.9%

Leaves you kinda breathless, doesn't it?

  1. My child is doing very well, thanks to Sylvan. First grade, our child could not read or sound out words. We have him in Sylvan 3 days a week and 2hrs per day. Within 2months he is almost into 3rd grade level of reading and de-coding words.

You get what you pay for. Per the Plainview schools. I wonder how many hours per day our children are spending in learning. Do the teacher's start at 9:15a?? How much time is spent on Math or any other subjects??

I went to private school. In private school I would spend at least 30 - 45 minutes on each subject. And yes, in 2nd grade( math, English, spelling, writing, etc. Art and Gym where the only subjects we left the classroom.

  2. The numbers that the teachers quote on how successful our students are are skewed. Almost everyone I talk to gets their child a tutor or extra help.
