  1. Im glad to see that the PARENTS CONCERNED COMMITTEE is still active after the forum. we still need to change school climate!!!! kids have to learn to tolerate other kids.
I am constantly coaching my son to stand up to bullies when they start...and it works. Words can be very powerful especially since many bullies have insecurities themselves...if they see your child with lots of friends and someone who can ANSWER BACK their nasty comments they back down....Unfortunately you have to teach your child to defend. if they are not the physical types then an unkind word back goes a long way.

  2. An unkind word back can also make the situation worse, much worse in some cases.

  3. Our union supports the efforts of the POB PARENTS CONCERNED ABOUT BULLYING COMMITTEE to get the school district to form a task force made up of members of professional staff and parents from various constituencies to plan for the implementation of the new anti-bullying legislation and address issues of school climate. The members of the PCT have no doubt that if we all put our heads together, we can even better job than we already do.

That said, we believe it is important to remember that while unfortunate incidents surely happen as they do in every school district, we have an outstanding record of achievement in creating a tolerant school environment. As someone who has been a part of the school community for many years, I invite you to share my perspective on the very positive changes that we have pioneered here, changes that many may be unaware of. My view is in my latest column on the PCT webpage at http://pobct.org/talk117.html.

  4. While I have little use for union leaders, as they/you are, by definition, advocates with a virtually mandatory bias, your point that there is a greater overall tolerance has merit. As do your arguments that bullying is in no way unique to Plainview.

Your finding a way to have the teachers taking some form of credit for that is novel, not to mention inappropriate given what has been occurring for the past few years.

Your further attempt to somehow praise the PCT for jumping on the bandwagon started by the Committee is, to say the least, ballsy. (As is giving the PTA any credit. Please do not confuse the PTA and the Committee as being one and the same.) Together, the administrators, PTA, PCT and Board sat on their collective asses while Rome was burning.

This isn't to say that you don't all want to see this movement succeed. Clearly, it is in everyone's best interests to see that it does.

What is interesting is to see how the PTA, BoE, Administrators and now, through your note, the PCT want acknowledgement not only as being part of the solution, but as being part of the catalyst of this movement.

The Committee is what got this going, albeit as the result of some very unfortunate circumstances. The irony is that the Committee is the only entity that is not out seeking credit.

  5. It's great that the PCT realizes that there needs to be voices besides PTA to represent parents. Let's hope the BOE allows for this also.

  6. How about the PCT get on the "bandwagon" to straighten the financial mess we are in . Instead they demand more$$ & bigger step increases. While the fiscal problems were discussed at the board meetings , the president of the PCT would get up afterwards mindless and uncaring about our schools financial distress to BOE that his members need a raise. I just wonder if the PCT will use this topic as another self justification for a raise

  7. The POB Parents Concerned About Bullying Committee is about finding solutions to the ever present problem of bullying in our schools. Was the committee started out of a need for it? Absolutely. Could everyone (staff, administration, PTA, PCT, community, etc) have done a better job in the past? Some would say probably, others definitely. Does this or similar problems exist in other places? Of course it does. Some districts have it better than we do, others much worse.

The bottom line is that a problem exists. A committee was formed to deal with the problem for the benefit of everyone involved. Let's get to the root of the problem, open up dialogue between all parties/groups/factions, identify what needs to be done and come together as a community to solve the problem.

I do not discredit anyone's anger at the situation. If we want things to change, we have to get past our anger, move beyond politics and safeguard our children. I know this is not easy.

  9. Are you kidding me Morty? I ended up leaving the district due to bullying that teachers didn't stop, so please don't act like you know what you are talking about.
