Is Money the Real Issue?

Jeff Spicoli has left a new comment on your post "To the BOE: How do you give out raises when we are...":

Perhaps the real issue is not how much everyone is making, but that many do not feel that they are getting much for their dollar. Yes, there are teachers that are golden, doing amazing things with students; dedicated etc. But, because there don't seem to be any delineated standards, from my vantage too many are phoning it in.
Generous salaries paid to our administrators don't seem to equate to good curriculum, accountability for themselves or for teachers, or excellence and continuity in all of the classrooms.
The Board of Ed, with people we voted in to represent our interests, are also a players in this mess.
When the District as a whole; teachers, administrators, as well as the union and the board can say these situations have been corrected, I think complaints about how much money everyone is making will be a thing of the past.

  1. Melee (pronounced /ˈmeɪleɪ/, from the French mêlée (the French spelling is also quite frequent in English writing), pronounced: [mɛle]), or sometimes referred to as "brawl", generally refers to disorganized close combat involving a group of fighters. A melee ensues when groups become locked together in combat with no regard to group tactics
(or the students) or fighting as an organized unit; each participant fights as an individual

  2. This is a money issue or better put about FISCAL RESPONSIBILITY or lack of. The question that has been repeatedly asked still remains that neither the BOE or Mr Rosenfeld will not answer is this: How do you justify giving raises out when your own attorney states at a board meeting that we would be in a financial hole for an additional 2 million dollars if we give the teachers a raise? do you not beleive the attorney? The BOE is supposed to reperesent the our interest as well as the children of Plainview. As far as fiscal responsibiliyis concerned , the BOE has ignored the residents and that is why alot of residents do not show up because they hear us speak but do not listen to us.

  3. It seems to me that you, the person responsible for this blog continues to start threads hoping to create animosity between the community and the people who work in it. Prehaps it's time to get off your soap box and give it a rest...afterall, it seems that people may have lost interest in your rebel-rousing.

  4. Actually, I don't think I've contributed to this blog more than 2 times- aside from the missing girl entry this week, in the last year and a half. If you notice it went for several months with nary a new entry. Sorry but your assumption is incorrect, perhaps you should look toward your neighbors.

  5. Suzala should be commended for starting this blog. Any intelligent person can see that this blog was not created to foster animosity. If you read a good number of responses on this blog you can see that this is not about bashing one group or another. We have a school budget that is out of control. This is obvious when a good number of residents open up their school tax bill.Beware if you should go to the board meetings and repeatedly speak up . You wind up becoming the "whacko, troublemaker etc" I went to a number of board meetings and there was one adminstrator who would stare me down before I got up to speak. Do I care ? no. As I see it, this blog is meant to get residents more interested in finding out how the policies in the school are set and how the school spends our money. Like any other means of communication(radio,tv, newspaper, and internet blog ) you will always find a few people that may be intent on being disruptive, disrespectful etc. This should not stop residents from voicing their opinion in a respectful and intelligent way in an effort to bring some ideas to thought that the school may have either not considered or ignored as they frequently do.

  7. Confucious also taught that teachers ought to be given unyielding respect at the top of a social hierarchy. That attitude still permeates the high-achieving East and Southeast Asian societies (and school systems). It's a clear reason why their schools work so well.

They don't have a cult of the taxpayer or customer service expectation of their teachers. Those American sensibilities ar as un-Confucian as you can get.

  8. Confucious probably never paid a 10 or 12 thousand dollar school tax bill . As far as East and Southeast Asian society school systems be higher acheiving goes. I bet they have a far superior education curriculum(not the teachers fault) then we do. They probably dont teach half the useless information to their children as we teach to ours. what we have is sticker shock everytime we open our tax bill

  11. ALL district contracts are up June 30,2011...Teamsters (Custodians and Aides),PCT(Teachers),and CAS(Principals, VP's, Directors and Chairs) and even though the Board of Education announced at the very beginning of the budget process that the NEW 2011-12 budget contained NO money for raises...I'd like to see how it goes...I'll believe it when I see it!
