Homework.... When is Too Much Too Much? Review, or Learn it Yourself?

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Student Schedule Problems...?": Please list this as a new post. HW- When is there too much HW I have one child in middle school and I find this ridiculous that he spends up to 2hours a day on HW. Some days there is more hw than others. I also have a neice in the high school that also spends up to two hours doing HW. In addition to this, children are encouraged to join clubs, drama, cheerleading, and sports. I look at some of the hw. I wonder sometimes, are the children reviewing what they learned for the day or being given work to learn on their own. I would like to know what other parents opinions are on this .

  1. We Have the best schools and teachers in Plainview... and I am so thankful... however My 7th grade son gets 2 hours of homework each day plus he gets homework on the weekends. WHY????
Something is wrong here, he is a bright boy and has no time for any other activities because he is so tired and wiped out!!! Does there really have to be so much homework? HELP! :(

  2. My son gets so much homework that he has NO time to study for the tests!!! He is in 7th grade and the homework is out of control!!!He starts his homework when he gets home from school and their is no time for him to do much of anything else. Sometimes their is a total of three hours of homework per night!!! He is stressed out and is only 12 years old.

  3. Yes the homework is excessive. Each teacher acts like their class is the only class the child takes. They need to remember that these kids have many other classes with homework in each. And then there are the projects and reports that they are supposed to be working on "in their spare time". My 7th grader is also supposed to be reading 800 pages a quarter. When is he supposed to fit that in? These kids need time to just be kids - to play occasionally like kids are supposed to do.

  4. My neigbor told his friend, a boe memeber, that thir wasn't enough homework. I know that member told an assistant superintendent and the administration then made the teahcers give more homework. That'swhy there's so much homework.

We want the teachers to earn there money, but then we complaign when they giv work? We shood be organised. It sounds like us parents shood decide, im confused.

  5. You are confused... There is no need for 3 to 4 hours of homework per night and also on the weekends. PEROID!!!

  6. Giving 3-4 hours of HW has nothing to do with teachers earning their money, the HW issue is just a disregard and carelesness for the children to think that it is ok for them to go home with so much HW. Maybe it could be some teachers are either lazy that they would rather the children learn some of the material on their own or the teachers are being pressured by the work load that they are required to complete

  7. Also, does a 7th grader need to have 3-4 tests in core subjects in 1 day on top of 8 pages of science HW? Is there any scientific data that proves getting 2 hours of homework a night makes kids smarter or just stressed? I think some of our neighboring school districts have rules about how much hw teachers are allowed to give. I think we should look into that too and see how they do it.There seems to be so much more put on parents and sometimes teachers seem to rely on parents to reteach their kids what they learned or didnt get the first time. Parents are so much busier trying to make ends meet to provide for their kids. How did those of us who are successful make it without our parents intervening in our homework? Who changed this and why did this happen?

  11. Excessive homework covers up for what isn't going on in the classroom. I agree with post that says burden has shifted to parents teaching kids at home. You really notice when your kid has a good teacher b/c this problem disappears. I disagree with kids reading a certain number of pages because reading becomes a chore to fit in. It sounds like a lot but can really be 2-4 books per quarter. Kids would learn more from reading several really good short stories that they go over together in class - not analyze at home with their parents!!!!! than pages of easy books just to fill up a requirement. Is it necessary to do multiple projects about the same book? Beating a dead horse after a while. No wonder kids stop reading

  12. Here is a link to a 10/23/11 article in the NY Times on reducing the amount of homework at certain elite high schools....

I personally don't think the level of homework given is excessive ... but that may be because he's only in 5th grade...
