What Do I Do When a Teacher is Abusive Toward a Parent?

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "What to Do About a Teacher with Unprofessional Beh...":

What should I do about a teacher who physically and verbally attacked her ex husband in front of the school where my child attends? This was a horrible example for a teacher to set. This is teaching violence and bad language. I told the principal and he said it was a personal matter.

  1. Did you or your child see it? If either or both of you did, you are within your rights to bring it to the attention of the school. It sounds like the principal gave you a knee-jerk reaction to what, in his mind, was hearsay. You'd probably get a different reaction if you put your concerns in writing.

Given the principal's verbal reaction, you can write a letter to the superintendent about it. Remember there are security cameras around every building. Provide her with the date and time of the incident and encourage her to review the security cameras. It would be useful to highlight the fact that this was a public display of verbal and physical abuse and thus are concerned about your own child's safety and well-being. I would also let the superintendent know about the principal's response.

Another option is to make mention of it to the teacher directly, again giving the date and time of the incident. Remind her how easy it is for one to click on the camera on a cellphone and request that she use better discretion on how and where to address personal matters on school grounds particularly when children could be around.

If you're concerned about backlash from the teacher or her colleagues/friends, you may consider providing all the details but keeping it anonymous but unless someone is willing to look at the security cameras, it may go nowhere.
