Where Was the PTA?

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "How To Deal With Bullies":

The PTA is terrific at fund raising and at enhancing the school experience, but a change agent? Not a chance.

PTA has demonstrated that they will not aggressively take on challenging topics. If the math issue was left to the PTA, we'd still be waiting. I do not feel represented by the PTA. I cringe when I hear "parent input" at a BOE meeting because it usually means "let's go ask the PTA." Sure there are some ex-PTA leaders on the BOE, but you'll find a couple of members that were elected in large part because they ignored the PTA and actually affected change.

Grassroots coalitions drive change. Passionate people can get things done. This PTA nonsense of declaring they are the only show in town is ludicrous and counter productive. If you want something to change, get involved without worrying which hat participants wear.

  2. There are some good advocates on the PTA. The problems of this district are not their fault. District committees are dog and pony shows and don't really give opportunities to talk and many administrators aren't willing to listen to what the PTA is saying. Questions are not always answered and concerns are not always followed up on.

PTA can only do so much. They are not to blame for mediocre academic standards or poor school climate or high taxes. They might not be the most outspoken group but something said nicely should be listened to as much as something said by 10 angry people at a BOE meeting. I blame administration for claiming they listen but never really doing any action that proves that they listened and I blame the BOE for allowing this to continue in every area.

The district website is a disgrace. It is stale and difficult to navigate. PTA is the one who sends out current information electronically and timely. I'm still waiting for my top secret password for the Parent Portal. Only half of Mattlin was told there was no power.

Why wasn't there a delayed start this morning while a tropical storm ravaged Plainview flooding the entrances to several buildings? Was it safe to send kids out in this weather? Who is managing all this? Where is the quality control?

Don't blame PTA for all our problems. They could be stronger advocates but they are doing the best they can with what they have to work with.

  3. Maybe the good advocates on the PTA should start a new group. PAA
    Parent
    Advocate
    Association
Do away with selling overpriced wrapping paper
,cupcakes and honoring teachers . Why does the PTA have to honor Teachers ?
As much as we pay them , that is not enough?
We ne a group with some people who have the backbone to go to a board meeting and not sugar coat everything like they do now. The PTA and the BOE should not act like one big happy family. They should act in a way similar to Labor-management groups who work towards one common goal while each side brings up issues that affect the group that they are representing. The PTA avoids bringing up any contoversial issues at board meetings. What are they too scared to? What is their real purpose?

    ABOLISE THE PTA
AND START A GROUP WHO REALLY DOES SOMETHING USEFULL
INSTEAD OF THE LITTLE CLIQUES THAT THEY FORM

I FOR ONE WOULD JOIN THAT ASSC.
