Needed: 9th Period. Change the Teacher's Contract

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "New School Year, Same Old Teacher Picketing?- Inqu...": Can you post this comment as new thread Get with it! 9 Period day.. Board of Ed- We voted for you. Now do something to change this. Parents do not realize this until they get to High School and their child can not take electives! There needs to be a 9 period day for High School! Can we ad a referendum to the voting? BOE..Time for change..Get with the times and start negotiating this in the teachers contact! Too many kids are missing out! All other districts provide 9 period days to allow for electives and especially extra help. All students could benefit from this not just the ones that need extra academic support. With the amount of money we pay to live here and how everyone brags how great it is...It's not that great when I have to choose either electives that enrich or academic support. Time for Change!

  1. It will no doubt interest the writer to learn the the PCT is not opposed conceptually to a nine period instructional day. Furthermore, we have repeatedly informed the Board of Education of our willingness to work with them on this issue. The simple fact of the matter is that it costs significant money to implement a nine period day, money that has been difficult to find in the past and which is impossible to find now in the era of property tax caps. It is interesting how people seem to automatically assume that it is the union that stands in the way of a nine period day.

  2. With a 2% tax cap that our state politicians thought a majority of NYC taxpayers wanted, how can any district be additive? They are going to have to try, desperately, to hold onto things. We can't expect to hold our achool taxes steady, amd add a 9th period. The union COULD allow teachers to teach a 6th period (they only teach 5 per day now), but they have never been willing to negotiate that. This would allow for some additional periods for electives for kids without adding the cost of adding time to ALL teachers' days. Online courses (for electives) is another way some disticts are giving students more offerings, but our teacher's union would never agree to that.

  3. The tax cap was not really intended so much for NYCresidents as it was for the suburbs like Long island where the tax payers have been getting shafted for years with the out of control school boards who pass budgets that continue to skyrocket out of control. I for one sent an email to my elected officials thanking them for passing the tax cap because of our BOE that is the expample of spending money like drunken sailors . The one part I disagree with is that the school can pass a budget exceeding the 2% if at least 60% of the voters agree. My answer to that is if you think the school should exceed the 2% then you should come up to the school and write a check .

  4. If you have a problem with letting a majority of the voters decide on an issue, then you should move to another country. We celebrate democracy here. If you think the BOE is not doing a good job, and you have ideas on how to provide a good education to our kids with less state aid, and increasing health and pension costs, then RUN for the board.

  5. I have no problem with democracy. I do have a problem with the loophole in the law. If you want the school to spend more money then the budget then you should go up to the school with a check in hand. As far as the BOE doing a good job. Where do I start? The fiscal irresponsibility, decaying buuildings , irresponsible PCT contracts . and the list goes on and on. As far as going to another country , that statement lacks the inteligence to warrant a response. Several people have tried to run for the board. That is why we need term limits so we can get some of the people that have been there too long off the board. As far as providing the boe with Ideas , I have been to plenty of BOE meetings, spoken at meetings and listen to residents speak. The one common thread is that the board ignores the will of the speakers most of the time . That is why alot of people do not attend anymore because they are tired of the polical game . As far as celebrating democracy, that is far from the political reality . The majority of residents do ot choose to vote. They only have themselves to blame for that

  6. Back to 9th period

How come some teachers don't even show up?

How come some teachers discourage kids from coming?

It's no wonder middle school test scores for Math and ELA were awful.
