What Can I Do About Irresponsible Dog Owners?

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Don't Get Shut Out from the Forum on Bullying/ Sch...":

Can you start a new thread for this topic that is clearly very different from all others?

Since this blog is about all aspects of life in Plainview, I have a subject I'd like to throw out for anyone's advice. I really don't know what to do here.

I live on a corner property. There are many lovely and responsible dog owners who walk their dogs and ALWAYS clean up after them. Unfortunately, there are a few who don't. I don't know what these people are thinking, leaving their dogs' feces on other peoples' lawns and sidewalks.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what to do about this one? Also, am I the only person in Plainview to have this problem?

  1. If you know who is the owner you have several options . First you could take the dog's feces and dump it back on their steps(not the best approach). A more logical step could be that you talk to the owners of the dog and ask them to clean up what your dog left behind. The last step would be to either take pictures of the dog while he/she is committing the crime or set up a video camera. Once you get the pictures make copies and drop them off at the police dept and maybe they can give the owners a ticket or fine.

  2. No you're not the only one with this problem and I agree that most dog owners are very responsible (and friendly) while it's just one or two that cause problems.

One neighbor never bothered to clean up after their dog. They didn't even carry a plastic bag just for show.

We live by a sump and their belief was the sidewalk and grass strip in front of the sump was a perfect bathroom for their dog since no one lived there. This made parking there disgusting since getting out of your car on the sidewalk side of the sump often left a surprise on your feet to bring in the house. Also, their dog especially enjoyed urinating on our lawn on their way back to their house and they believed that was fine also.

We had the town put up a Curb Your Dog sign on the sump property, which they ignored.

I used to stand outside by my front door in the morningwhen they walked the dog. They got the message pretty quickly to go past my house but they didn't care that I watched them let their dog do it's business at the sump without cleaning up.

The dog died a year or two ago and fortunately they didn't get another one. It's a lot cleaner on our block - especially by the sump. All the other dog owners are great about cleaning up.

  3. we have a dog and don't walk on the sidewalk. we walk our dog on the street. even though we clean up, i felt bad leaving any residue where people walked.

most people are really good. talk to the people or put up a sign. if that doesn't work take a picture and send to the police.

  4. Sounds like a great idea! After you take the picture, you should seize the evidence immediately! Then you could send it to forensics to identify the dog.

  5. Reminds me of a joke that Steve martin used to tel...he wanted to avoid a $250 fine for letting his dog poop on the sidewalk so when the police officer stoped him, he said the poop was his....sorry, just hoped to bring a smile to your faces....if you are on a corner property, what about putting up a decorative small fence just on the corner?Putting flowers in the bed between the sidewalk and the street?

  6. How about the people who walk their dog without a leash? very disturbing to say the least. Then you have the cat owners . They are terrible . Some cat owners beleive that cats have the right to walk around other peoples' property at all hours of the day and night. They are like all animals, they should either be on leashes or behind fences. They are not humans as some people treat them like they are .

  7. The fence idea and a flower bed is an interesting idea. I've actually never seen flower beds in this capacity. Hmmmm. I'll have to think about that one.

The problem with talking to people is that I don't know who they are. I did some research online and found there are sprays on the market that will repel dogs. Supposedly the smell bothers animals but not humans. They suggest you spray each day for about two weeks. All the dog needs is to smell it once and they'll never come back. Does anyone know anything about this?

    Thanks for all the comments.

  8. How about animal owners be responsible . Buying spray, that is not the answer. make the animal owners be responsible.
