Five children from Plainview competed with 13 other teams this Sunday at the Jr. Lego Exposition held at the Longwood High School. The "BrainFreezers", composed of fourth graders: Ryan Norris , Spike (Rebecca) Ramhap, Allison Taub, Evan Hitsky and third grader Jennifer Zhu , coached by Jasmine Norris and mentored by Erin Norris presented research on how important it is during the manufacturing of food to keep bacteria out. They concentrated on the production of Ice Cream and even took a trip to the University of Connecticut, where they toured a small dairy farm, manufacturing plant and ice cream bar to study first hand the variety of safety precautions that are taken. Jr. FLL Lego considers and gives out a variety of awards, including: best model build, best display board etc. but it's underlying theme is that of Gracious Professionalism, a spirit that embodies, team work, co-op-etition and an overall good research presentation. I am proud to report that the our team came away with the Gracious Professionalism Award. A bystander at the expo remarked that it was amazing what great research and how together kids can be when they are excited about something. The BrainFreezers met for for 6 months and had such a great time, they plan on returning as a team to participate in the middle school version, next year.

ReplyDeleteNo it was not. Sadly, there are no elementary, or Jr. FLL teams in our district. It is nice however, to see the great accomplishments children at such a young age can succeed at.
