PTA Letter to Class Parents: Teachers say, " No parents in classrooms"

Dear Class Parents,

We would like to inform you of a decision that the teachers have made. At this time the teachers will not be inviting parents, including class parents, into the classroom for class parties. Most of you have met or talked with your teacher about this. This does not mean that they will not be having class parties. The parties will probably be at a smaller scale. They might ask you to get or make something small for the party like cupcakes and water.

If you are asked to purchase or prepare a longer list of items, we recommend that you ask the teacher to scale down the list and make it simpler. The teacher should be giving you instructions soon since you need time to call parents to ask them to contribute either money or other things to the party. This year we are not collecting money at the beginning of the year so class parents need more time to prepare.

Parents will still be invited to chaperone on class trips.

If your teacher has not yet set up a meeting with you, please email the PTA at pasadenaelementary@gmail.com. We will keep you updated as we get more information. We will also be sending a similar letter to all the parents at Pasadena

Thanks,

The Pasadena PTA

  1. it's so nice to see how the teachers choose to welcome the community into the schools. A friend of mine lives in Merrick and she says there are parents there ( in the schools) all the time. In fact sometimes they are asked to teach classes in their vocation. In Jericho, I am told that the school actually reaches out to the community professionals so that mentor relationships can be formed to help high school students who think they want to be in a particular profession.
No POB teachers are all about: get me in at nine. Get me out at 3, and if I have to do anything extra make sure I get paid for it.

  2. While the Pasadena PTA Executive Committee acknowledges that we wrote this letter to the class parents at Pasadena for informational reasons, we did not post it on this or any other blog. We feel that you should include this fact above the letter. The Pasadena PTA does not take sides on this issue and by posting it this way it looks like it does. Could you please change this?
    Thanks,
    The Pasadena PTA Executive Committee

  3. My experience has been that Plainview teachers have always been willing to go above and beyond, arriving early, staying late, meeting with parents to plan parties and activities for the children on their own time, calling parents in the evenings instead of spending time with their own families, working in their classroom during the summer months without pay. I believe that the lack of a contract that is in line with what other neighboring districts have offered their teachers this year has left teachers feeling a lack of support- that all the extra work that they have done, work that was not required or compensated, is now being ignored, expected, or unappreciated.
