Vote Yes, But Change the Faces on the BOE

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Teachers Will Still Get Paid, What Will Your Stude...":

The writer of "Teachers Will Still Get Paid, What Will Your Student Lose? " is exactly correct about the budget. Voting down the budget does not correct the state wide pension problem. This is a fix that needs to happen on the state level and perhaps local level as well. Contact your representatives and give THEM a piece of your mind. Voting down the budget will only negatively impact our children. Our budget increase is less than that of many school districts and our budget has persevered programs for them. In the original budget proposal 7 middle school sports teams were going to be cut but the BOE chose not to do that in order to keep these programs available to our children. Am I happy with the contract deal and that there were no give backs in the last contract agreement? No. Remember that the original deal was made and the PCT's response was done with the old school mentality of this district that parents put up and shut up. Things are starting to change with the parents who were brave enough to speak out and the outpouring of opinions on this blog. The PCT who brazenly fought the original deal pretty much ended up taking what was offered in the first place. This is only a two year contract and is going to be renegotiated soon. Hopefully the PCT and the BOE will think back to this past negotiation and be wiser with a new contract. Vote "yes" for the budget but change the face of the BOE so that the next contract to be negotiated is in the favor of the residents and not the PCT.

  1. Today's Newsday highlighted some school budget cuts:

Half Hollow Hills is eliminating 22.9 teaching jobs and 5 administrative jobs through early retirement, reducing annual high school course load from 6 to 5, and eliminating 9th grade intrascholastic teams.

Lindenhurst is cutting 40 teaching positions, eliminating summer school and intramual sports, restructuring their gifted and talented program to accommodate the loss of a teacher, and cutting a 9th grade alternate learning program

Glen Cove is cutting 19 staff positions, including 9 teachers, 2 guidance counselors and 3 administrators

We've still got summer school, intramural sports, all of our teachers (except for loss due to enrollment), Project Challenge, all the programs for kids with special needs.

We've eliminated 2 library aide positions (about $100K savings)

Was this not enough or was it an honest effort to try to do the right things for kids by keeping things status quo as long as possible before making cuts?

Our budget has good things for kids in it. Maybe they could have cut some administrators but it still deserves to pass even if you're unhappy with the teacher contract and/or the BOE. Think about the kids.

  3. Why should the PCT and the teachers be fed up, they have one of if not the best pension plan in the country and are also enjoy being among the highest paid teachers in the country as well.

  4. Someone posted that two library aide positions total 100K. Is this possible? Even if this includes both their salary and benefit package, it seems like a lot for an aide postion??????

Ms. Weinstein realized that it's over for her, decides not to run. She must have read the writing on the wall.

Next to go has got to be Bettan, what has he done other than ignore the economy. The state is cutting aid, the people of this community are asked to take unpaid leave and pay freezes and he went ahead and voted against the wishes of his community. Vote no to Bettan.
