Put in the Time, Then Ask for the Raise

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Sadly, the Children are Rarely Spoken About":

I can not believe that teachers are saying we should be happy not to be in Amityville or Hempstead. Personally, I think that the statement that blogger posted carried a tone of racism. It is inappropriate and wrong. I pray it wasn't a teacher who made it because it isn't the example I want for may children.

And to tell me to be thankful for "what I have" conveys a public employee entitlement mind sight. I don't "have" family or possessions. I earned them. Effort at work and effort with family/children build on these things. But you wouldn't understand. You don't view salary increases as a function of effort. You view them as something you "have" or "get" as a function of time.

And for the teacher to then say "You should be happy you are in Plainview"...Hello? I paid to be here.

It is you that should be happy to have a job in our schools. If Amityville and Hempstead are your standard for comparison...then quit and seek a job there!

But if you plan to stay...maybe you can consider putting in a 6.5 hour day like all of the districts you compare yourself with. After all, if you believe that salary increases are a function of time....the least you could do is put in the time before demanding the raise.

  1. I don't think it was teachers who posted the comments you refer to. One would expect teachers to have a higher level of professionalism than that.

I do agree that whoever wrote those postings miss the mark. They neither give specifics as to why they believe this school district to be so superior nor do they address any of the concerns raised.

  2. Higher level of professionalism?? are kidding??where was their professionalism when they were whining at the board meetings??
where was their professionalism when they were picketing??
Where was their professionalism when they were walking in front of my children with "contract now " buttons??
The only thing for sure about them is that the PCT and teachers promary concern is the almighty $$$$$$$$$ and LACK of Professionalism

  3. The Teachers have it completely wrong, The teachers should be happy they do not teach in amityville or hempstead.

The reason POB is a good school district is that the parents (majority of parents) are college educated and value education as the most important issue for their children. The parents spend extra time and effort to make sure the students do their homework , study for tests and understand what they are learning.

I guarantee if we traded all our teachers for the teachers in those towns our students grades would be the same or actually better. The teachers from those towns might actually take more effort to teach our children when they realize how much better our facilities are and the family focus on education is.

( I appoligize as I am not trying to knock amityville or hempstead but just stating a point)
