Game? Do you really believe that? Please, this was the first time since I've been in this town (over 20yrs.) where the board has not voted unanimously on a teacher contract. Do you really want to know where the game is being played? it's being played out in the voting booth by the PCT and their puppet rubber stamp Board members. Gary Buttan's up for re-election he knows who votes and who doesn't, Ms. Weinstein's term is up also, how did she vote? The only Board member who's up for re-election that had voted the way the community has been saying they wanted the Board to vote was Mr. Cepeda. The Board knows who votes and who doesn't, the voters are mostly made up of PCT members who live in this community, other teachers whose union tells them to vote sympathetically with the PCT and the Board member's friends! The rest of this community do nothing but complain and whine but can't be bothered to make a difference at the voting booth. You get what you vote for, and if you don't vote then there's nothing to complain about. Let's separate ourselves from the nickname this town has earned in the past (ComPlainview) and start to make a difference. Every Vote counts if it's cast!

Teachers Should Retire on Their Own Money

Beware wolves in sheeps clothing.
One of the spouses of a teacher was at a board meeting recently espousing what seems to be Mr. Rosenfeld's next move "TEACHER BUYOUTS" I say, teachers want to retire, let them don't pay them to retire. This will be more costly than letting them retire. This community better wake up and get involved, we have let the nuts run the asylum long enough, we need to put the control of the board into the hands of the many not the few.

Correction and Urge to Vote

Sorry, you are so misinformed. The three seats on the Board of Ed. That are up are Ms. Weinstein, Mr. Buttan and Mr Cepeda, the only one who voted against the contract and is up for election was Mr. Cepeda. So this shoots your game theory to shreds! I agree that we need to elect Board members that represent the community, but we need the community to come out to vote not just bitch about it.

Apathy Be Gone

Union Decides who's on Board and who's not!
After the public voting of the contract, 2 teachers were heard saying that they now know who they have to get rid of. The problem with this community is the fact that not only do we have teachers in our district who live hear we have the clericals and nurses also who are part of the PCT. We know how they'll vote and let's not forget that there are teachers who teach at other districts who live here also. We need the rest of the community to not be so apathetic when it comes time to vote and make sure that the union doesn't pick who our Board members are.

Clarification? on Teacher's Benefits
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Real Issues Like Teacher Pensions, Benefits etc.":
Sorry to report, but no 'lifetime medical'. Teachers pay 50 percent of insurance for individual when retire and 65 percent of family when retire. That is POB. Other districts contribute more. Other districts contribute less. Green is not a good color for anyone. We can always 'pick' someone elses pocket. Let us be thankful for what we all have and hope for betterment for all.

Anyone Have a Spare 7 Million?
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Have You Seen the Budget?":
No I have not see the budget. As stated in the board meeting by the schools Attorney. He was quoted as saying"if we do not give the teachers a raise then we will have a 5 million dollar deficit in 2 years. If we give them a raise then we will be in a hole 7 million dollars"
That is what he stated. How are we supposed to come up with 5-7 million dollars in 2 years? Unless they plan on lowering the budget , we will be in a huge hole . Like it was stated before , it is time for fiscal responsibility.

PCT Partner?! Since When?
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "It's Time to Partner to Address the Real Issues":
As far as partnering with the PCT, are you just kidding yourself. lf or what. If the PCT wanted to "partner" with residents then they would of not been whining for more money when there are plenty of residents who are out of work, working for less etc. I was recently told of one class in one of the elementary schools that a teacher was telling one of the parents that they recently found out that a majority of the students' parents in his/her class were unemployed. Maybe we should ask those parents about partnering with the PCT

You must be either a teacher or an unaware of teachers salaries, benefits, perks etc
Teachers pension is calculated at 2% a month for every year they work based on the highest 3 or 5 year period. So let us look at a Plainview teacher with 40 years teaching having made $100,000. They retire with an $85,000 pension that is not subject to state tax which puts the actual value of the pension higher. they also have lifetime medical from what I am told. If that is not a ridiculous pension that we are forced to shoulder on the backs of working class residents then what is excessive??

It's Time to Partner to Address the Real Issues
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Time for Fiscal Responsibility":
Yes, responsibility is an important word. It needs to be defined on a local, state and national level. It's time for the community, the teachers and the administration to partner together for tax reform. We need to form a coalition to get our voices heard; taxes are way too high!
The system of taxation in NY is broken. Monies collected on Long Island are not being returned to our communities. It is time that we fix it. Let Paterson know, let King know, let Albany know and let Obama know.
How can we do that? I think we need to work together; community, Board, PCT and NYSUT. Teacher's salaries are not the real issue, just the issue du jour. The real issue is that LI taxpayers are paying more than their fair share, that Albany is skimming money from LI and that NCLB is broken beyond repair.
Site based management works. We have a wonderfully productive district that produces phenomenal graduates. We have issues that we can fix. A partnership will provide synergy to an already active community.
Let's partner, not divide. Focus on the real issue - taxes!

BOE Was Irresponsible
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Time for Fiscal Responsibility":
The Board of Ed obviously does not watch the news or read the paper regarding the 7% unemployment rate on LI or Mayor Bloomberg's comments just yesterday regarding the layoff of thousand of teachers in the city. It is discusting to say the least that the people on the board who voted "yes" last night. You should be ashamed .There is no fiscal responsibility in your minds. If the members of the BOE were up for re-election, would they have voted differently? What happens now when our state aide gets cut? Do we layoff the teachers who just received this bonus like every other district or do we just cut the programs for our children. Irresponsible...

Are Teacher's Spouses Planning to Run For Board? Truth?
Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Time for Fiscal Responsibility":
Residents be aware !
At last nights board meeting there was a rumor going around that 2 plainview teachers have spouses that are planning to run for the board in the spring. This is a direct conflict of interest that is not in the best interest of our children. They should not be voted for. And if true , a complaint should be filed with the current board and any other agency to stop this. Last night the board officially sold out on the residents and children when they bent over backwards for the teachers. 2 & 3 % raises for the teachers. any board member up for re-election should not be re-elected!

Enough is Enough, We Need a Change

Well after that Board meeting we now know who on the board were the fiscally responsible ones. Kudos to Mr Cepeda and Ms. Pierno. Let's not forget when it comes time to vote. Mr Buttan and Ms. Weinstein your terms will be up soon. We need to open the windows and let the fresh air into the board room with the WINDS OF CHANGE, and continue with the next group when it's their time. Enough is enough.

New Board Needed, It's Up to You to Vote

I feel for those who can no longer afford to live in Plainview, I am slowly becoming one of them, but to think that voting down the Budget will not have an impact on the children is ludicrous. If you've been to board meetings, you would've heard explained that the difference between a defeated budget and one that has passed is minimal, but a defeated budget brings on many other problems. We need a board made up of people who "GET" the community, so as to know to keep down the costs of running the district. We currently have board members who look and act disinterested in what we have to say, as if we are wasting their time. We have the makeup of the board due to our own apathy at the voting booth. GET THE MESSAGE OUT AND VOTE.

Board of Ed Meeting, PCT Contract Ratified
Ed's note: My appologies, this is being posted well after the mentioned board meeting.
At last night's meeting, the BOE voted to ratify the PCT contract.
It was the last item on a very long agenda, including student awards.the proposed Wellness Policy, Response to Intervention (RtI) and website updates.
The BOE took a 15 minute break before New Business was addressed.
Board President Lori Weinstein read a prepared statement which outlined the terms of the 2-year contract:
Teachers
2009-10 2% raise
2010-11 2.75% raise
0.25% raise to contribution to Welfare Fund in year 2
She explained that the BOE was in agreement for the increase in the first year but not for the terms of the 2nd year.
The vote was 5 to 2, with Board members Angel Cepeda and Amy Pierno voting against.

Voting down does not mean a direct impact on the children. The board and the teachers always throw that at the residents. How about the parents who no can no longer afford to live in Plainview because no one knows when to say enough is enough with this out of control budget. What about these children?Fiscal responsibility is a word that should be taught in our school. It appears very few people are aware of the definition.

Only the Kids Will Suffer
Patrice Finkelstein, POBMS Parent has left a new comment on your post "Time for Fiscal Responsibility":
Unfortunately, voting down the budget will do nothing for the mandatory costs, like the teachers salaries and pension contributions, and the contracted costs, etc.
All it will do is take away the clubs and sports and "extras" the kids get and put us back to a contingency/austerity budget which is basically bare bones. It will affect the paper for the copiers, construction paper for the classrooms, textbooks and other classroom supplies.
Voting down the budget will do nothing to show the teachers, the administration or the union anything other than that we don't care that our kids will go without.
Sure, it will send a message, but I'm not sure it will send the message that we want it to. Unfortunately, only the kids will suffer and have to do without while the teachers, administrators and union go on with business as usual.
