I Would Go To Another Store....

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Teacher Speaks Out":

Are you kidding? You ARE getting paid median salary for teachers on LI. Did you use "Investigations" to figure this out? And as your Fairway comparison, I would go to another store if I didn't like the price. So, if you really are a teacher, then go to another school district and try to get paid better. And as far as why people are angry; at least I can tell you why I am... that's because YOU took this to the classroom and the schools involving MY kids. After SEEING how greedy and insulting the POB Teachers Union is to the community and to my kids, I think all of you should be fired. If you really are a teacher, I think you are in the wrong profession. Hope you're not expecting holiday gifts this year....It's not in the contract. PS..how about the quality of teaching in this district in recent years. The way the "handouts" are given out, with incorrect information, missing information or spelling errors, or copied so much they can't be read. Tests being graded incorrectly, because other kids are grading them instead of the teacher. Why do I feel like I am doing the lessons? Where is the extra help? It just shows how the teachers in this district are doing their jobs. Btw, sorry if you feel insulted. Oh well. I am and I don't think your union cares.

  1. People move to Plainview for the schools, plain and simple. You CHOSE the community because of the quality of the education, just as you would choose not to serve your family the cheapest, generic-brand food. And you made an excellent choice in choosing Plainview: home prices on LI are determined by the quality of the schools in their district, and an equivalent home in POB has a much higher value than one in a neighboring but lesser district. Everything has its price, and you seem to have already made that choice. Schools aren't buildings, they're places where teachers teach, and Plainview teachers are extraordinarily experienced anad caring.

  2. The average English essay takes at least 15 minutes to grade, and the average English teacher at the high school has around 130 students. You do the math: that's 32.5 HOURS of grading. Surely you don't think those can be graded during school hours? What do you think teachers are doing on their "weekends?" How about grading, planning, and writing hundreds of college recommendations that YOU and our students count on us to write?

  3. Holiday gifts? Who ever gets holiday gifts? I'd settle for receiving a thank-you note after writing the dozens of college recommendations I do each year for students--who forget all about thanking us for the hours we put in helping them get into the schools of their choice.

  4. "...I don't think your union cares." The union, in case you didn't know, is made up of teachers: it's faculty and staff, nothing more, nothing less. And we care desperately: enough to spend our evenings and weekends grading your children's work and writing them the college recommendation that will get them accepted to colleges. We probably spend more time with your children than you do, and certainly more time with yours than with our own. Because we DO care; because we didn't make our career choice predicated on money but on service. The problem is that we need to be able to afford the same essentials that you need: food, homes (largely more humble than Plainviews', however), educations for our own children. We are unusually well-educated and experienced and proud of it: we bring that wealth of talent and professionalism into every class we teach.

  5. Wow! Four posts disagreeing within an hour? Hmmmm. How about answering the statement about bringing your battle to the classroom. Btw, 15 minutes to grade an english essay? MAYBE college. HOW ABOUT ANSWERING THE STATEMENT OF BRINGING YOUR BATTLE TO THE CLASSROOM?

  6. The HS teachers are posting about all the wonderful things they do. And I don't doubt that they work very hard and are dedicated. The complaints are primarily about the elementary school teachers. Maybe some of them might venture to join the conversation.

  7. I think most of the community is very happy with our teachers and our school district and we need to remember that. The primary issue is that unfortunately there is no additional money available to give the teachers the raises that they want. Taxes will still be need to be raised with the raises already being offered and the board in good conscience can't offer the teachers more than that because the majority of this community cannot shoulder the taxes they are already paying. It is just one of the sad facts of the economy.
