Teacher Speaks Out

Concerned has left a new comment on your post "Are Our Teachers Underpaid?":

Why doesn't Plainview want to pay teachers the going rate on Long Island? Is Plainview a secluded island that is not attached to the rest of the county?
Why don't you go to Fairway and tell the cashier that you don't want to pay $1.09 for a quart of milk? Everyone else on Long Island should pay the going rate, but people in Plainview should pay less because they are fiscally responsible!
Teachers have taxes to pay, children to educate, spouses that may be unemployed and groceries to purchase--just like everyone else.
Why are angry people taking their frustrations out on teachers? We are the ones who take care of and educate your children. We have devoted our professional lives to Plainview's children. WE are with them every day. Many of us spend more time with them than their parents do.
Why do people on this blog feel a need to rudely insult teachers? Don't you want teachers to treat your children with kindness and respect?
If you are concerned about the children and you want a tone of normalcy to return to our schools, call the Superintendent and members of the Board of Education and tell them to put an end to this standoff.

  1. 1) the rest of the country, even the rest of this state does not pay teachers the way they do in Plainview, so do not go there. Yes the cost of living is not the same, but don't make the comparison if you don't want to go there.
    2) Buying milk is done in a free market economy. I can buy mik at costco, or Trader Joes, or, I can choose not to buy milk at all.
    3) The board made an new contract raise offer, (in an economy where very few people are getting raises and certainly don't have guaranteed jobs)and it was snubbed.
    4) as a result, the community feels pimped over.
    5) I'm not sure anyone has 'insulted' teachers, we are just fed up with what seems like a lot of posturing, and taking the act of "asking" for a raise becoming, " we are going to try and put you over a barrel," bit of gall.

  2. PS.
    6) Last I checked, spending the day teaching my children, is exactly what your job description is, that's why you get paid.

  3. What will it take for the residents of Plainview to go to the Board of Ed meeting and speak out. I was at the board meeting and spoke. We had some good speakers , but alot of empty seats . If you don't go to the meeting and speak up you can't complain.

  4. We are taught we have choice -
If Plainview does not offer you or pay you what you think you are worth you have CHOICE!
    1. Look for a job elsewhere or
    2. Stay, accept what you have and do your job!!
    It's simple.

  5. Why is it that when somebody who claims to be a teacher or an advocate for the teachers leave a posting, it reads so contradicting to everything?

  6. Intersting how all of the angry parents are focused on teachers who they believe are underserving of this tiny pay increase they are fighting for, one that basically equates to in after tax dollars to maybe filling up an SUV with a tank of gas. I am not a union person, but just curious why nobody is talking about the schools superintendant who makes with benefits over 250,000.00 a year plus draws a pension from his old job or people like Ryan Ruf, assistant superintendant of business who last year got a 10.75% pay increase to over 170k, and these are based on last years numbers. The school board costs us over 1 million dollars a year, tell me. WTF do they do to deserve that kind of money? Then all of you, who it is clearly obvious that most of you know absolutly nothing about the facts go and start this blog, why would anyone who researches Plainview and has young children want to move here after reading this nonsense.

I am not a teacher, I am not a union person, but I did take the time to learn the actual facts and not just a one sided view of either the union or the school board. Maybe some of you should do the same before you get your wish, our property taxes will go down, because the value of our homes will further diminish because nobody raising a family will want to move here.
